A prominent teacher of buddhist philosophy went to learn meditation from a zen master at the Zen masters house. The Zen master invited the teacher for a cup of tea, the teacher sat down at the table as the master began to pour the tea into his cup. The cup filled, yet the master did not stop pouring and the tea spilled all over the table. “Stop! What are you doing? You are spilling the tea – the cup is already full!” said the teacher. “So are you” asnwered the master. You want to learn meditation? I cannot teach you – your cup is already full. First empty yourself of conditioning, unlearn – then come again open and empty ready to receive.
